One Surf Lesson or Three in Nusa Lembongan? How to Choose
Plan your island days · Monkey Activities

You would love to try surfing on Nusa Lembongan. But should you book one lesson, or make time for three? Start with two things: what you want from the experience, and how much flexibility you have during your stay.
Choose one lesson if you want an introduction or only have space for a single session. Choose three if learning to surf is a priority and you can return for more coaching over several days.
Neither option comes with a guaranteed result. The best choice gives you enough time to learn at your own pace, with the right conditions and support.
What do you want to take home?
For some travellers, a good holiday memory is trying something completely new. For others, it is starting a skill they can keep developing after the trip. Both are good reasons to book a lesson. You do not need to commit to a long programme just because you have never surfed before.
One session lets you discover how you feel on a board and how you respond to coaching. Three sessions give you more opportunities to revisit feedback. If your first attempt feels awkward, you have another lesson in which to work on it instead of trying to remember everything at once.
One lesson: a practical introduction
The beginner surf lesson starts with beach exercises, followed by a boat trip and practice with the instructor in the water. Think of it as a guided first experience: getting used to the board, trying the movements and receiving feedback.
It can also be a sensible starting point if you are unsure whether you want a longer course. If you hope to add more lessons afterwards, ask about availability before making that your plan. Do not assume extra sessions will be available, or that a single lesson automatically converts into the package price.

Three lessons: time to return and refine
The published beginner programme moves from board position and standing towards better control, then turns and surf etiquette. That is a useful direction for learning, rather than a deadline for mastering each skill.
Tell your instructor what felt difficult and what you would like to work on next. You may need to revisit a movement, take things more slowly or adjust to different waves. Repeating a useful exercise can be more valuable than rushing to the next one.
Already surfed? Choose your level before your package
Lesson count and lesson level are separate decisions. If you already catch waves and stand without assistance, look at the intermediate course. It includes an introduction to reef breaks and coaching on technique.
If you have only stood up with help, or it has been a long time since you surfed, describe that honestly when you enquire. Share what you can do consistently, rather than choosing a level because of how many lessons you have taken elsewhere. The team can help place you.
How much should you budget?
One group lesson: IDR 600,000 per person. The three-lesson offer is IDR 1,600,000 per person when booked online at least three days before the first lesson during low/mid-season. These prices and offer conditions were confirmed by Monkey Activities on 6 November 2026. Ask for the applicable price for other dates and for a separate private-lesson quote.
At those rates, three individually priced lessons total IDR 1,800,000, so the qualifying package saves IDR 200,000. Choose the package because you want the extra coaching and can fit it into your stay, as well as for the saving.
The three-lesson booking product is labelled as a deposit. The amount paid online is not the total course price. Confirm your final total, remaining balance and payment arrangements with the team before paying.
Leave room around the surf session
The surf lesson overview lists a total duration of up to 2.5 hours, with boards, a rashguard, reef boots and boat transport included. It also lists a maximum of three students per instructor for group lessons. Confirm the arrangements for your booking, especially if your group needs private tuition.
Lesson times follow tides and ocean conditions. The school publishes start times around three days ahead, so avoid building the day around an assumed morning or afternoon slot. BMKG’s Badung Strait marine forecast provides regional weather and sea information; your instructor still needs to assess the actual lesson location.

For a single lesson, keep the surrounding part of that day open. For three, send the team your arrival and departure dates before fixing other activities. A useful planning outline is to arrive and settle in, take the lessons during your available island days, and keep some flexibility for conditions or rest. This is a suggested approach, not a fixed timetable or an accommodation package.
If you also want to join a snorkeling trip, agree both schedules before booking. Allow time to return, change, eat and rest. You can also compare our surf and yoga retreat options.
Plan the rest of your island stay
Once your lesson dates are agreed, you can build the rest of the trip around them. Our related websites below cover places to stay and other activities; check each booking separately rather than assuming it is included with your surf lessons.
Stay on Lembongan for more time in the water
If you are making room for three lessons, compare accommodation at Isla Indah Retreat. For a stay organised around both activities, explore Isla Indah’s yoga and surf retreat and ask the team to confirm the room, inclusions and dates that suit you.
Add snorkeling on another day
For an outing while you are staying on the island, see Manta Snorkeling’s Lembongan tour and booking details. If friends are staying in Bali, Manta’s Bali or Lembongan departure guide explains the different arrangements.
Those keeping a Bali base can also review the Bali-to-Lembongan snorkeling day trip at Lembongan Snorkel Co. (Lembo Snorkel). This is a full-day, partner-operated snorkeling outing, not a surf lesson package. Keep it on a separate day from your planned surf coaching, and confirm availability and transport with reservations.
Age, swimming and sensible expectations
Monkey Activities accepts surfers from age 6 in private lessons and from age 10 in group lessons. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres. These requirements were confirmed by the team on 6 November 2026. Give children’s ages and describe everyone’s swimming confidence when enquiring; age alone does not settle which arrangement is suitable.
Do not treat standing up once, or finishing three sessions, as permission to head out on your own. The RNLI’s surfing safety guidance stresses checking conditions and knowing your limits. Its UK lifeguard and flag instructions are location-specific; follow your local instructor’s briefing in Lembongan.
Before leaving the course, ask what you should practise next and what kind of conditions you are ready for. Being clear about that is a more useful takeaway than a promise to reach a particular level by the final day.
Ready to choose?
Send your preferred dates, number of participants, ages, swimming ability and surfing experience. Say whether you want one introduction or repeated coaching, and mention any ferry departure or other fixed booking.
Let’s fit the lessons to your stay
Ask the team to confirm your level, dates, meeting point and price. Then use the appropriate booking link once you know what you are reserving.
